Snow, Ice, or More Sunshine?
When snow and ice hit Wichita, there’s a whole operation behind the scenes working to keep our streets safe and passable — and it’s worth knowing how it all works so you can plan your travel and stay safe during winter weather.

🛠️ A Well-Prepared Fleet for Winter Weather
Each winter, the City of Wichita Public Works Department gears up for snow and ice removal with a dedicated team and fleet ready to take on the elements. The city exceeds its minimum staffing levels with over 150 trained snow plow operators ready to respond when winter storms arrive. There are approximately 70 trucks equipped with snow plows and salt-sand spreaders, plus eight brine trucks used to pre-treat roadways before snow begins to fall. These vehicles operate out of multiple dispatch locations across Wichita throughout the season.
Wichita focuses its treatment efforts on the most critical parts of the road network first:
Emergency routes and major arterials — about 1,500 lane miles that serve hospitals, emergency services, schools, and high-traffic corridors.
Secondary arterial streets and school access roads come next in priority.
Because the city has more than 5,000 lane miles of streets overall, crews concentrate on the main routes first to ensure emergency access and overall mobility.
While the city handles local streets, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is responsible for winter maintenance on state and federal highways such as K-96, I-135, I-235, and Kellogg in the Wichita area.
🚜 How It Works When Snow Starts Falling
Before a storm, crews prepare by inspecting equipment, stocking salt and sand supplies, and staging vehicles for quick deployment. Once snow begins:
Trucks begin treating and plowing priority routes first.
Crews may work in shifts, sometimes around the clock during major snow events.
You can often track where plows are working on the city’s snow removal map online.
Wichita also uses salt-sand mixes and brine pretreatment to help melts and prevent ice binding to pavement, though effectiveness varies with temperature and storm conditions.
With all that said, this fleet of maintenance vehicles has had plenty of downtime so far this winter. The big question now: will Kansas warm back up again, or will we finally get cold enough to see some true winter weather roll in?
