What’s Next for the Old Downtown Library?

Remember the old Wichita Public Library building at 223 S. Main St.—the iconic “Brutalist” structure that served as downtown’s central library for decades, then became a COVID-19 vaccination clinic in 2021? Now, Wichita is ready to write the next chapter.

🏛️ From Bookshelf to Ballrooms

The city has earmarked $2 million to renovate the first floor of the former library and transform it into an event venue—think weddings, corporate meetings, banquets and downtown activations. Because the building has sat mostly empty, city officials believe this adaptive reuse could breathe new life into the space and the surrounding area.

🔍 Why This Matters

  • The building’s architecture and history make it a downtown landmark—reusing it means preserving design and memory.

  • Turning a vacant asset into a revenue-generating venue supports Wichita’s goals of smarter, greener reuse and downtown vibrancy.

  • The council is focusing on activating the first floor now—with potential later phases opening up the upper levels if the space succeeds.

🚀 What’s Coming Next

  • Community meetings and design planning will roll out in late 2025; construction likely will stretch into 2026 and maybe 2027.

  • The scope right now: convert lobby, meeting rooms, and main floor spaces into flexible event areas.

  • Discussion is underway about future uses for the upper floors: small business incubators, co-work space, visitor hubs, or even food/retail.

If you have fond memories of browsing books or studying in that space, or if you’ve always wondered what could happen to it next—now’s the time to watch the progress!
